What Dog Breeds Require A Compulsory Dog Insurance Policy

Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers and German Shepherds top lists of dogs some consider dangerous. Owning a pit bull should not be taken lightly. Some cities and towns have banned the breed. The Singapore Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) makes it compulsory that owners of these dogs carry insurance for at least S$100,000 for coverage against “injury to persons and damage to property”.

Protecting your dog and yourself

No matter whether you think the requirement is justified or not and are sure you can very well keep your Bull Terrier or German Shepherd in check, you nevertheless still have to arrange for the insurance. You will need to fork out the insurance premium and provide an additional banker’s guarantee of up to S$5,000 to ensure that you comply with a comprehensive list of additional requirements as mandated by the AVA.

On top of this, home insurers may require you to declare your higher risk pets and raise the premiums of your Home Insurance coverage (since some of the insurance policies include personal liability coverage).
