There is no longer a need to obtain an embassy performance bond to allow Indonesian maids to go on home leave. Here is how we found out;
The Indonesian maid of one of our clients wanted to go on home leave recently. Our client was under the belief that he had to buy an Indonesian Performance Bond of SGD 6000 in order obtain the documentation to allow her untroubled passage to Indonesia and back as recently mandated by the Indonesian Embassy. Hence he requested Insurance Market to help him to secure the bond.
A scheme was in place whereby the Indonesian Embassy would accept a bond issued by Singapore based insurer Liberty. Without announcement by insurer nor embassy Liberty however appears to have stopped issuing this type of bond. No reason has been provided. After a couple of phone calls Insurance Market was able to establish that there is no longer a need to buy an Indonesian performance bond for a maid that intends to travel home to Indonesia and back to Singapore again.
Our customer was delighted to get resolution on the confusion and with the news that this requirement has been dropped, saving people time, trouble and money. There are more than 120, 000 Indonesian maid in Singapore so the aggregated consequence is significant. Great news not only for employers but also for the Indonesian maids.
