Car Care: How to take care of your vehicle while stuck at home

Many think that car care only involves keeping your car clean through regular car washing and grooming, but in actual fact, it consists of more than that. Cars are an extension of our daily lives and we should all learn how to care for them to ensure that we not only remain safe while operating it but also ensure that they do not become money pits with expensive and avoidable mechanical breakdowns.

Here are some additional ways to care for your car on top of keeping it clean especially during this pandemic.

1. The Bird ‘bombs’

Bird droppings are highly acidic and if left unattended for long, will start to eat into the paintwork. Fixing this is a costly but avoidable affair, as your car will require either an expensive paint correction or a full respray. Always keep a packet of wet wipes or insect remover on standby so that you can remove the droppings immediately. Alternatively, you can also search out sheltered parking spaces.

2. File all receipts

Keeping repair and servicing receipts will help you and your workshop track what was changed and what needs to be changed on your car. it also serves as a means for you to track you service history. Receipts also aid your resale value should you decide to sell your car, as your prospective buyer will know if it was well-maintained and what wear and tear parts were changed. Some of the more common but costly parts you should look out for are engine mounts, water pumps and shock absorbers.

3. Rain rain go away

For the budget-conscious, application of rain-repellents help improve visibility especially when driving during adverse weather conditions such as thunderstorms as the hydrophobic effect helps bead water away. Applying it on the head light and taillight will also help keep the lens clear. If you have more cash to spare, consider having paint protection done, which helps bring back the shine while reducing maintenance.

4. Hibernation time

When leaving the car unused for long period of time, get someone to start your car or disconnect the battery to stop battery drain as certain electrical systems like the alarm are kept on even when unused. Also, you should consider storing the car in a sheltered, safe and clean environment. This helps to prevent unwanted creatures from turning your car into a home, as well as to guard against theft and weather-related damage.

5. Keeping mess and stains at bay

A well-made car mat not only fits well but helps to keep mud, dirt and grime off your car’s carpet for a cleaner, stain-free interior. They also come in handy if your occupants have a habit of drinking or snacking as spillages are more easily contained and easier to clean. As a result, car mats are able to prevent unnecessary damage to your carpets. Always have a portable vacuum on hand so that any spills can be quickly contained.

6. Let there be light

Ensuring that all of your car’s lights are working properly is vital. Not only does this help with your ability to see where you are going, but it also makes you more visible to other motorists on the road. This will ensure both you and other road users’ safety when on the roads, and help to reduce the risk of an accident. Of course, make sure to turn them on manually if required. You should also always use approved lighting equipment so as to not blind other motorists on the road.

7. Regular health check-ups

Always ensure that your car is serviced regularly and important fluids such as engine oil and coolant are changed at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals. This ensures that your car is operating at optimal conditions. Also, ensure that other important parts such as air filters and brakes pads are checked and replaced if necessary. Should you decide to do any modifications to your car, following the maintenance guideline set by the manufacturer will help to prevent damage to the engine.

8. All about the rubber

Always ensure that your car’s tyres are filled to the manufacturer’s recommended level. Tyres should also be rotated every 10,000km to keep the wear even, professionally inspected to ensure roadworthiness and replaced if worn out. Having worn tyres or over and underinflated oneswill result in them not performing as specified and will compromise the car’s safety. Remember, it doesn’t pay to cheap-out in this case.
